.MODD File Extension

Sony Video Information/Summary File

Data File
This file is used to store information on video taken with various Sony Camcorder models. This file is reported to accompany a .m2ts file (See links section below).

The mysterious .MODD file appears to contain information regarding dates and time-lines related to your recording. Attempts to delete these files in order to improve video archiving have resulted in loss of time-line data and some claim to have experienced a loss of audio data.

I use a Sony DVD handicam and it downloads a .mpg & .modd for every video. From what I've gathered its a Picture Motion Browser information file. Supposedly if you delete the .modd file the video won't show up in the right place in the softwares timeline.

I use Nero 7/8 to create my DVDs from Sony .mpg and .m2ts files; the picture and sound are both perfect. As far as I can tell the .modd file is just a reference file and is not used for anything at all ... I am ready to delete all of them!

I recently bought a Sony Handycam DCR-SR42E. The camera has a 30GB hard drive which we have illed with 20 hours of video. I imported the files onto my computer which have shown up as both .mpeg and .modd but i cant watch either in wmp. When i try importing themn into windows media player it says the file is either not valid, corrupted or "it does not contain any information". Can someone please help me figure this out?

Grant you should be able to view these through the supplied Sony Picture Motion Browser software ... did you install that? or through Windows Media Player 11 software ...

Brendan, I just downloaded Windows Media Player 11 and it gives this message: Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

My friend emailed a movie clip using a Sony Handycam with the file extension .modd. I'm unable to open and view. Don't know if she can convert the file so I can view it.

Can anyone help?

Have a Sony SR-1. If you need to play files in Media Player 11 instead of Sony software you need to download the following: 1. K-Lite Codec at www.free-codecs.com/K_Lite_Codec_Pack_download.htm Then you need to download the Haali Media Splitter at www.videohelp.com/tools/Haali_Media_Splitter Once you do that you can view the files in media player. You can also convert the files to an .avi format and still keep the HD quality with a product called Cineform Aspect. This product is not cheap at $500 but if you spent $1500 for Adobe photosuite and want to edit video it's what you have to do!!! Good Luck!!! It took me months to figure this out with no support from Sony.

In Picture Motion Browser, click on Manipulate then Convert to WMV and Save...

That worked for me to be able to view, edit and save with Movie Maker.

I too can't find convert in the manipulate menu... My problem is that I can import into WMM but when I try to save it as a movie file (to change the video to a smaller size for quicker upload to my website) it gives an error saying that it cannot save the file because the source file is not in the same place...

I asked some friends and they suggested purchasing Sony's editing program because they tend to configure their products to only work with their own. Honestly, I like to keep things simple and WMM is the perfect program for me for editing... HELP!

windows media player version 6.4.09.1130 seems to play the mpeg-2 format from my sony sr-200 where windows media player 11 does not.

Also under my "manipulate" menu there is not a convert tab.

I have a DCR-DVD810 (no, not HD video) and I'm running PMB ver 3.0.00.11220. I use WMP 10 because I've had a lot of problems with 11. Make sure you have the correct codec.

I don't know if I have a more recent version of PMB as I just bought this camera. Check your version then we can see if the "Manipulate -> Convert to WMV" is new.

Here's a screen shot of what it looks like (with Convert to WMV highlighted) --> www.theindoorrange.com/PMB.jpg

Don't worry about the .MODD files, leave 'em alone. Work with the mpegs.

Allyson - Have you tried saving the Project prior to saving the Movie? When I import the mpeg into WMM, I get audio but no visual. I have to convert them to WMV first.

Sony's software is proprietary and not easy to work with outside the "Realm of Sony". However, I like their products and until I cannot find a way around their software, I'll keep using it.

I also like the ease and familiarity of WMM but have been contemplating Ulead --> www.ulead.com/vs/runme.htm

Does anyone know how to enable in Picture Motion Browser the following:

Manipulate > Convert to WMV and Save

I was told that this option exists, even given a screenshot, but my (version) Picture Motion Browser has nothing like that under Manipulate.

Either that, or maybe someone here can suggest to me how i can either:

1) Convert out of .modd/.mpg format to make my video a different format so i can put into another video editing program to do work on it.
2) Find a program that tolerates .modd/.mpg and permit editing of that particular video.

I'm not looking to do any spectacular form of editing, just clipping/adding Fade effect.

TMPGEnc tolerates the .modd/.mpg format but does not have a fade in/out feature. Windows Movie Maker on the other and rejects that file extension.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Sharyn - thanks for posting a reply!

My version is 2.0.06.13151 which is bizarre since we JUST got the camera...but the copyright is 2006 so it's old.

Does anyone know where to get a softare update?

I also have Ulead and have tried to convert the video using it but I run into the common problem of no audio with the video...

SO basically, whatever version of PMB allows you to manipulate/convert does the trick?

Allyson,

The only way I've been able to work with these files in Movie Maker was to convert them in PMB first. (since that worked, I haven't looked for alternatives).

What camera are you working with? That will help me search for what you need specific to your situation.

Here is a link to the Sony website with a lot of helpful information, including software and driver updates. I've entered my camera model for demo, but you can enter yours in the upper right box and click on the >>. That will bring you to your models page and all of the links on the left "Support by Type" will be specific to your model.

esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-home.pl?mdl=DCRDVD810&LOC=3

Since we know the option "Convert to WMV" is available and it works in my situation... you could try contacting Sony support by phone and listening to what they have to say... ? I haven't had much luck with their phone support in the past, though.

I'm not interested in Ulead to solve this issue... just as a video editor in general. (c:

I just got a DCR-SR36E and am having a problem when using the PMB software to convert to WMV format-- I get some kind of 'SPUWMVCONVERSION.EXE' error message almost immediately. Could this be a codec issue? I will try the CCCP codecs, but haven't had luck with em in the past.

I did download VirtualDub and an MPEG2 plug-in that lets me edit, albeit too simply for my needs. I haven't tried burning a DVD yet.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention- The One-Touch burning option on the cam doesn't work either. I am getting really burnt-out already.

Guys!! The moff and modd files are just summary files created in PMB to help it index the pictures/movies. They are not video. See how small they are? The m2ts or larger file with the same name.. different extension is the VIDEO that you are trying to see.
tip: always use in windows the "details" option to view your files and be sure that the extensions arent hidden (to enable hit tools/folder options/view/ uncheck "hide extensions for known file types")
Also, if you have problems viewing the video in PMB, make sure you don't have other codecs for avchd installed. Halli(sp?) and other free codecs can make PMB have a white symbol representing your movie. This means your codec is having conflicts. Remove offending codecs and you will see a thumbnail picture of your newly uploaded camera picture. The Sony install disk has a decent codec to see your movies quite well.

I got a f. sony sr8 camcorder half year ago with a fortune. I bought it because I like to record every day my kids, but I got also hundreds of breake down because of (again) these "special", "hi-tech" and other bla-bla sony extension. I don't have a special skill to use a computer but these sony extensions make me and my computer complectely useless. What do I have to do to save in a normal extension my avchd full hd recordings? Same problem as many. I have a Sony HDD camcorder and I can view and hear my files in PMB (picture motion browser) but when trying to bring files into other software with more capabilities I can ONLY see my videos and NOT hear them. I believe the Sony PMB should also work for the SR12E as I have the SR11. However, when working with files (.modd), it does not tranfer the audio to other editing software. ie Adobe premiere Pro. But with a bit of labor, I was able to convert the video to a WMV file through the "manipulate" tab (Thanks Karen) and then unlink the audio from the video in Adobe. Once I did this, I deleted the video section and then placed in the higher resolution video (non-maniulated) files. So far so good. Completed a 20 min video; and audio links perfectly with the video. Have NOT completed DVD burn as of yet, but all seems well.

@ mike - good luck with DVD burn. I am without success there, either. I have had some weird luck with Premiere, but the output had some kind of lines in it. :(

@alan - ah, Windows MovieMaker is ok. Not professional output, but good for internet type display. I used WMConverter to change from .wmv format to whatever is needed. Not great always, but....

Anyone else have the problem where the manipulate tab just doesn't show? I get the uneditable icon for the movies. :(

@ fuzzy,
I finally got around to doing the burn - used encore. First cut scenes had some pixels (believe lighting issue). But the rest was great. Overlays, transitions, adding of pictures, etc all worked well with out any problems. Audio matched perfectly with higher res. video - I was very pleased with the initial results. I plan on trying it now with a more extensive video of a trip to Quebec. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Hi guys - have read this thread through after experiencing similar sound loss in a cheap editing program. I did not have the "convert to .wmv" option in the Picture Motion Browser. Found a free program that converts from .mpg to .wmv or anything else that you want, called prism.
With this program you can take the original sony .mpg file, convert it to an .mpg file (yes, I know - sounds stupid, but trust me!!) then open that file in the movie editor of your choice - this worked for me.
Keeping the file as an mpg (I'm hoping) keeps the original file size/definition

I can't stand .modd files!!!!!!!! You can't use sony Vegas, camstudio, video wave, adoble premier or windows movie maker to edid video with these stupid Sony HDD cameras!! I am so mad I spent all this money on this camera 2 yrs ago and can't edit home movies with sound. Yeay you can get the video with some apps but no sound in any of them.
