Web File
A URL, or a uniform resource locator, is typically the address of a website or a web page on the internet. These files can typically also be used by any internet browser and can be saved by Microsoft Internet Explorer, though it usually saves them without the URL extension.

These file formats are also saved in plain text formatting and can be opened with any common text editor in order to edit the URL inside.

A URL file is a short cut to an internet address (URL) that will start a browser and go to that address. It is a text file similar to a .INI file in format.

Here is a sample URL file:
[InternetShortcut]
URL=http://www.someaddress.com/
WorkingDirectory=C:WINDOWS
ShowCommand=7
IconIndex=1
IconFile=C:WINDOWSSYSTEMurl.dll
HotKey=1601

Only the first two lines are mandatory.
