.SLN files belong to Microsoft’s Visual Studio application and are used to hold individual or multiple projects. The advantage of this approach is that all projects within the solution can share functionality and information.
It is important to note that solution files do not actually contain any items; instead each .SLN file contains a list of items with their locations and any build configurations that are required.
You can open a solution file using a standard text editor, although we advise you use Visual Studio if you are not completely comfortable.

Thanks for the description. Do you know if solution files are used in VS 2008 or is it 2003/2005 only?
