A command that is used by Windows in order to accomplish a task. These commands may include directory navigation, file manipulation tasks, bringing the desktop to the top of the window stack, changing file permissions for directories or files, changing the status of the file to and from hidden and read-only status, and many other tasks that would have commonly been done in the underlying DOS system.
