Files with a .PSD extension belong to Adobe Photoshop, possibly the most popular image editing tool in modern computing.
The .PSD file format is the default format that Photoshop uses for saving data. These files may contain many different types of data required by Photoshop, such as multiple image layers, masks, notes etc.

According to the IANA (at http://www.iana.org/assignments/media-types/image/vnd.adobe.photoshop), the correct MIME media type for .psd Photoshop files is "image/vnd.adobe.photoshop". Use whatever works for your particular server and clients' browsers, though.

There is an Open-Source that I use called GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) I believe is what that acronym is. I use it for all my graphics.
gimp.org
They have a Mac & PC version. I have worked extensively with both of them.
