PHP files are a preprocessed web file that is often used for developing web pages and applications. The file is processed on the server and then the resulting HTML is sent to the requesting client; the code contained in a PHP file may also be used to perform a server-side action, such as a client authentication routine, that does not result in HTML and which the client is not aware of.

PHP files are generally only able to be processed by an Apache web server.
