.PHL File Extension

Amazon Kindle Popular Highlights File

Data File
The PHL file extension is associated with the Amazon Kindle e-reader. Kindle eBooks come with three separate files: an AZW file which is Amazon’s proprietary eBook format, a MBP file used for storing user notes and drawings made within the eBook and the PHL file.

PHL files are used for storing the Popular Highlights of an eBook such as certain passages or phrases that have been highlighted by readers repeatedly. They are marked with a gray dashed underline.

The PHL file format is XML based and stores the starting and ending positions of an annotation as well as the number of users that have highlighted the passage.

How to open PHL Files

Since PHL files are XML based, they can be opened with any text editor such as Notepad for Windows, TextEdit for Mac and Vim or Nano for Linux.
