The MXF file format was developed by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) for storing multimedia content. MXF files are used by SMPTE as standard containers for video and audio data and they can also include metadata used to describe the content stored within the file.
SMPTE created the MXF File Format as a solution for streamlining multimedia projects across different platforms, servers, digital devices and audio/video editing applications. MXF files can be converted into other multimedia formats such as MOV or AVI and also provide support for playlists and Edit Decision Lists (EDL).

I found a Program called Max 5.1, from cycling '74 that will run .mxf files, but you have to buy it.
