MPA (MPEG Audio) is a compressed audio file format, which utilizes either one of the MPEG Audio Layer I, II or III compression algorithms in order to provide significant file size reduction with minimal loss in sound quality.

The MPA file format was originally part of the MPEG-1 specification, but with the introduction of new advancements in the algorithms, was later updated to match the MPEG-2 specification. While in theory any of the three compression algorithms may be used to produce an MPA file, in practice most MPA files are usually compressed using the MPEG Audio Layer II algorithm.

Due to the small file size and retained audio quality, MPA files are often used in audio broadcasting and storage on modern mediums like CD or DVD.
