.ECR files are created by the product "Ecrypt", which was developed by Email Connection (Pty) Ltd.

.ECR files are archives containing compressed and encrypted financial documentation.
.ECR files were used by Email Connection (Pty) Ltd to distribute documents to customers who use their services.

"Ecrypt" has now been replaced by "Ecrypt 2005" and Email Connection (Pty) Ltd now use the .EFA file extension (see links below).
