.DAE File Extension

Digital Asset Exchange File

Image File
The DAE (Digital Asset Exchange) file extension indicates an XML document used for transferring 3D images and animations. This file format is based on the COLLADA (COLLAborative Design Activity) open standard XML schema which was developed by the Khronos nonprofit technology consortium.

The COLLADA standard is currently owned and further improved by Autodesk. Later versions also offer physics and kinematics support. This allows users to implement various physical attributes to 3D animations, for example friction or collision volumes.

How to open DAE files

DAE files can be opened using various Autodesk applications. Autodesk Maya 2013 with the ColladaMaya plugin is available for Mac and Linux users while Windows users can choose from AutoCAD or 3ds Max and Maya 2013, both requiring the ColladaMaya plugin.
