ASC is the classic and accepted file extension given to an armored PGP-encrypted file. After the file has been encrypted with the public key of the recipient that it is being sent to, armoring the file can provide an additional layer of security and can help to verify the sender of the armored file. Armoring the file uses the private key of the sender and allows it to be decrypted by the public key by the recipient.

asc is a common extension for ascii armored files output by pgp. This can be a key, a clearsigned message, or a detached signature. The ascii "armor" protects the messages integrity from line ending problems common with ftp and html.
