Corel is a Canadian graphics software company with headquarters in Ottawa, Ontario. It started out as a research laboratory founded in 1985 by Michael Cowpland. The name of the company is an abbreviation for "Cowpland Research Laboratory".
Released in 1989, one of the first successful Corel products was CorelDRAW, a vector-graphics editor that also included the PhotoPaint image editor. After the technological boom of the 1990s, Corel also acquired the Novell WordPerfect document processing software.
