.TIF File Extension

Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) Image

Image File
The TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) file format can have either the extension .TIF or .TIFF. The format was originally designed for desktop publishing applications by a company called Aldus, but is now owned by Adobe.

The TIFF format is widely supported in scanning and faxing applications as well as imaging and publishing software.

TIFF files can be stored without compression and in this scenario, the produced image is lossless (no loss of quality). Alternatively, .JPEG compression can be used which will see a slight reduction in the quality of the image although this is usually barely noticeable. The TIFF format also supports LZW (created by Lempel-Ziv-Welch) compression which is lossless but will not reduce the overall size of the file as well as .JPEG compression.
