Question: What is an J2C File?

Have you found, downloaded or received an J2C file, but don't know which software program is required to open it?

Before attempting to open an J2C file, you'll need to determine what kind of file you are dealing with and whether it is even possible to open or view the file format.

Answer: Files which are given the .J2C extension are known as Joint Photographic Experts Group 2000 Image files, however other file types may also use this extension. If you are aware of any additional file formats that use the J2C extension, please let us know.

How to open a J2C file:

The best way to open an J2C file is to simply double-click it and let the default assoisated application open the file. If you are unable to open the file this way, it may be because you do not have the correct application associated with the extension to view or edit the J2C file.

Please check back soon for more information as we are constantly updating our file descriptions based on search frequency.

Tip: Try to open the J2C file using a text-editor such as Notepad, as many file types contain simply contain unformatted plain-text and can viewed correctly using this method.

J2C, or "JPEG 2000 Codestream" files are portions of a JP2 (JPEG 2000) image returned as a codestream- i.e. they do not have the full JP2 image header but do have much of the same internal structure.

J2C isn't usually seen in the wild- often, you're taking part of a JP2 (the J2C) and immediately converting it into a plain JPG in software. The only tool I know of that reads them is called "KDU_SHOW" and is freeware off the internet.
