Files with the extension .GPX (also known as 'the GPS exchange format' are XML (Extensible Markup Language)files associated with 'GPS' (global postioning systems / software).

.GPX files are used to exchange GPS data between programmes and users, .GPX files are not specific to any one program but instead are utilised by a wide variety of programs and platforms including: Windows software, MAC software, GPX-enabled software for Mobile Phones and PocketPC and Palm PDAs:, Online applications, etc.

The GPS information held within .GPX files may include information on: waypoints, routes, tracks, and other position based information.

.GPX files are used by applications such as:

* Google Earth - 3D viewer
* World Wind - NASA satellite imagery.
* iGO - Pocket PC GPS navigation.
* J2ME Map - GoogleMap / Virtual Earth interface.
