ZUL files contain a rich web application that is first processed on the server side by Apache and then sent to the client. These files may be used to create AJAX applications without having to do AJAX programming and are most similar to JSP files.
ZUL files are formatted in a manner similar to XML making them able to be opened by text editors for editing, but only able to be properly parsed by a Web Browser.
