Listing of file formats used to store configuration settings for software applications and operating systems.

Configuration files contain a number of settings that can be modified to change the behaviour of a software application, operating system and server services. These config files are often parsed before the software starts so that the application can programmatically respond to the current configuration.

These settings files are usually stored in plain-text format, allowing the settings to easily modified. Modern configuration files tend to store setting is XML (eXtensible Markup Language) format.

Widespread Configuration File Extensions include: INI and CFG.
