The chipset on the modem was from Rockwell, so I believe that the R in .rif refers to a proprietary format developed by Rockwell. I don't believe these .rif files are RIFF files. I would like to locate a converter program that would batch convert .rif into .wav files for archiving so that I would not be required to have my now-15-years-old software installed and working (OS mismatch possible) in order to listen to my old voicemail messages. [Added: Found this: "The DOS conversion programs (DMAIN.EXE, DMAINB.EXE) convert between Rockwell's ADPCM .RIF files to linear PCM files in a .WAV file format suitable for playback on standard MPC hardware, such as a sound card, and vice-versa."
