MP2 file extension

TV programmes recorded on the TVFetch Smartbox 8000 can be exported to a USB stick for playback and editing on a computer. These files have the .mp2 extension and play in Windows Media Player.
However files recorded and exported from Channel 4 either lose their audio when opened for editing in Sony Vegas Movie Studio or cause a problem and shut down the program.
Does anyone know of a program that will edit these .mp2 files? I have tried Pinnacle and Cyberlink and they just refuse to open the files.
