JVC Everio Camcorder Video File
Related .MOD software |
Some digital Camcorder models (I.E JVC Everio) save their videos in the .MOD video format. These files are often accompanied with small .MOI files (See links below) which contain the videos' time-stamp information.
The .MOD format is simply a MPEG2 formatted video file, and if you simply wish to view the files on your computer, it is reportedly safe to rename the extension from .mod to .mpg or .avi
The known camcorder models that use the .MOD format are:
JVC: GZ-MG30, GZ-MG70, GZ-MG37, GZ-MG77, GZ-MG505, GZ-MG130, GZ-MG155, GZ-MG255, GZ-MG555
Panasonic: SDR-S100, SDR-S150, SDR-S10, SDR-H18, SDR-H200, SDR-H40, SDR-H60, SDR-SW20
Canon: FS100, FS10, FS11

If this happens to you!, follow these steps:
#1) Return your camera to to it's factory-preset condition. Use the reset button on the camera to do this. Instructions on page 56.
#2) Release/delete protected files. page 38. Neither of them helped me much since I didn't have any protected files. (but you might!)
#3) Clean up the HDD or SD files. Instructions on page 40. I did all of these things and the camera still told me my hard drive was full, so then
#4) I tried the instructions for further removing the files from the hard drive by following the instructions on the right hand column on page 39. This worked! If you're camera gives you this message, try these things to get rid of all old files on your hard drive. BTW When you upload and view new files on your computer, you will have created a new folder. This happens when you remove all data from your camera.
Kelsey, I have no clue why prism automatically updated my format and why yours didn't? That is strange. However, I'm glad you found a way around it!

I use the streamclip to trim the beginning and ends of the video, where I usually manage to jiggle the camera while turning it on or off. I then exported the file to my computer hard drive as an .avi. That worked well in Windows Movie Maker, and it kept the sound and picture.

no you have to use adobe premier elements to capture if you decide to use the docking station method. If you do this, you must use your firewire lead connected to the docking station and the pc not the usb. Once you connect the firewire, adobe will recognise and you can capture.
but..... you can otherwise just import the .mod files directly from the camera using the usb. I have done it. You can copy the files to your computer or just import the .mov files directly to adobe. I am a bit confused as so many people cannot do this, but I can. I don't change extensions or do anything. Just import the .mov files.

Fel, I didn't even know we could use the camera as a webcam? I didn't read this part if it's in the user guide. Webcams are quite cheap and can be purchased for around $20 anywhere. It makes more sense to just buy one I would think, than trying to use a $500 camera? Just a suggestion.
Alixcz, I don't have adobe premier or a Mac so I can't help ya on that one, however I don't exactly know what you mean when you say the movie is 'fitful'?
Thanks!

Editor 2 is great for converting to MPG files. You can even combine your files into one if you like. We all know that each time you stop recording and start again a new file is created. If you are like me you may have many files of the same "scene" that you want to combine into one file. Editor 2 will do this. You can keep them as individual files as well. Author 3 is great for authoring these files into DVD VIDEO_TS files. If you have chosen to keep all your files separate during the conversion process using Editor 2, you can group your files into "tracks" (scenes) with each file being a different chapter using Author 3.

C:Documents and SettingsPrinceDesktopTrash trailermovies 002.avi could not be imported. The required codec was not downloaded automatically because the Download codecs automatically check box is not selected in the Options dialog box.
Carolyn [HELPER] | 2008-03-24 17:45:11 |
Prince, I am not sure why you are getting this message. Why is it saying you've got your movies in the 'trash'? on your desktop? Do you have spaces between the file name? Please also check the options in your prism converter and let me know what your settings are. It may be that you have the wrong settings checked in the options.

Thanks first of all for all your support. I write from Italy.
Just a question. Do the .mpg extension is the same as mpeg2?
When I convert .mod file into .avi file, the program Windows Movie Maker freeze! Why this?
Let me know. Antonio Consoli
Antonio | 2008-03-25 10:27:21 |
I'll try to exlain better. I convert .mod to .avi and then when I want to make a movie with Windows Movie Maker, this program feeze!
One more info: I use PC with Windows XP Media Center as O.S. I've a laptop Asus A6J series (A6Je-AP023M) bought one year ago with Intel Core Duo T5500 at 1.66 GHz. My memory is 1024MB (512x2MB).
My camcorder is JVC Everio GZ-MG130 and any softwares like Power Cinema, Power Producer and Power Director by Cyberlink don't recognize .MOD file.
I installed DirectX 9.0 but problem remain.
I think is not a problem related with Antispyware and Antivirus because I tried without but It seems a sort of other programs conflict because on my father laptop (older laptop, two years ago) everything works properly.
JVC assistance could me not help me. What do you suggest?
Thank you back again. Antonio
Carolyn [HELPER] | 2008-03-25 14:41:41 |
.mpg and .mpeg2 are different files. .mpeg2 is actually .mod and there is an .mpeg1 also. Although .mod files exist, the internet only recognizes .mpg and .mpeg1 right now. By the time it recognizes .mpeg2, our cameras will be outdated. (most probably)
What program/software are you using to convert the .mod files to .avi? After you convert to .avi, are you reviewing them before you import them into WMM? If you are not able to view them, then you have a problem with the conversion and not WMM. If you can view them, then there is a problem with WMM. You may have to unistall it, then reinstall it or go to Microsoft to get a fix/plug for it.
Are you uploading the movie files to your laptop or your PC? I am a bit confused about what you said about your father laptop? Are you able to use WMM on it? You are right. Antispyware and Antivirus would not interfere with a movie making process. (not that I've ever heard anyway)

I give you further and more clear infomation about my case.
First I answer to your question:
1) To convert the file I used your suggested program Prism. I converted .mod both into .avi and .mpg. I both review them and are perfect video and audio. I'll try to re-install WMM but maybe it's better for me to use other program to elaborate and create video like Power Director by Cyberlink.
2) I upload the .mod file from my camcorder into my laptop. I don't a "fixed" PC; I've a laptop. About my father, he has an older laptop but things are going perfectly and on his laptop I can trasfer .mod file to create DVD using any Cyberlink program. With my laptop this is impossible because these are the error:
- With Power Cinema NE for Everio error message says: error code 80004005;
- With Power Producer error message says: not possible to add .mod video file; and
- With Power Director error messages says: instruction to "0x11de1b02" made reference to memory "0x00000040". The memory couldn't be "read".
I think my laptop minimum requirements are ok. See my preceeding message.
I contacted JVC in Germany and they said me this:
To ensure that our software will work perfectly on your system please reinstall it regarding the following steps:.
Installation:
In case you will be requested to restart your computer during the whole process please do so and start again at step 2.
1. Boot your computer
2. Logon as administrator (only needed for Windows NT4, 2000, XP and Vista) 3. Please deactivate any software which is running on your system. (anti virus programs, firewalls, etc.) 4. Install DirectX 9.0C (or later) and the latest patches and service packs from Microsoft for your Windows system.
5. Install the latest driver for all of your hardware components (e.g.
mainboard, graphic card, sound card, TV-card). You may find those driver on the website of the hardware manufacturer.
6. Install your Cyberlink software.
7. Install the latest patch which can be found on our website:
****//****gocyberlink.com/multi/download/download.jsp
Starting up:
When starting up the first time please consider steps 2 and 3, later you may also use the software as main user but not with normal or restricted user rigths.
I made all suggested by them but the only things I cannot do is to install all the patches because I need this program: PowerCinema 5.0, PowerDirector 5.0 Premium; PowerDirector 6.0; PowerDirector 5.0 Retail; PowerDirector 4.0 Express; and PowerProducer 4.0 but these program are not free I guess.
This message is a little bit long but I need your opinion.
Please help me. ;-)

Tim, the only thing I can suggest is that you review your settings on the camcorder and make sure you are using a time stamp. Its in the manual somewhere. (I have a different model JVC than you do or I'd direct you to it.) Make several dummy videos with different settings and see if you can get any of them to work right for you. Or contact Prism and tell them the error message you are getting. Maybe they'll have some ideas.
Many of us here in the forum have had a terribly hard time trying to figure this stuff out. JVC certainly didn't make it easy for us! thats for sure! It took me months to find a converter that worked for the .mod files, for example.
Antonio | 2008-03-31 05:13:30 |
Thank for all your assitance again.
I got from JVC the SW version LY35273-024A but same errors for me.
I really believe now that is some program conflicts in my laptop because in this weekend I tried in another PC (Acer) and there works perfectly. Whenever I'll solve this problem I'll let you know.
Where I can write this my problem to Microsoft support? Do you have any e.mail address?
More, as you know if you use Cyberlink program .mod files are "converted" into three kind of file which are .VOB, .BUP and .INO I guess. While you use Prism converter you can convert .mod files into .avi or .mpg.
Is the video quality of .avi or .mpg files the same as the .VOB (with .BUP and .INO)?
Last question: when I convert my .mod files into .avi or .mpg and when I put into DVD by Nero 7, DVD run by standard DVD, stops in different point of the track. Why this? Am I doing something wrong while converting by Prism?
Let me know. Thanks. Regards, Antonio
Brian | 2008-04-02 15:24:26 |
By concedence i downloaded that free converter program you advise, Prism. So far i havent really gone for it as i did what others do and found that it prompted" File format not recognised ".
I`ll try it again after your advice on the matter :).
Carolyn [HELPER] | 2008-04-03 11:57:17 |
My JVC videos upload as .mod and .moi so I am not sure about the extensions you mentioned, although I've seen them before. You must convert to another extension to upload online. I am not sure about the DVD's though. You maybe able to do DVD's using .mod. Please read all the info on this page. Its there somewhere. Video quality is not as good for .mpg or .avi as it is for .mod, but its better than nothing!
Brian, right now the internet does not recognize .mod files. (.mod are actually mpeg2 files which are not recognized by the internet yet) You must convert them to either .mpg for MAC or .avi for WINDOWS. Yes, Prism will tell you that it does not recognize/support the file. Convert it anyway. You should get an automatic patch from Prism straight away that will fix this. (you must be online!) It always says that the file may not be recognized. Not sure why but it does. Ignore it and get the update. If it does not automatically update, go to Prism and explain. They'll hopefully tell you what to do.

Antonio | 2008-04-05 08:32:35 |
For ramneek, I think the best way is to go through your local assistance.
For Carolyn: I guess my problem then is related with some SW's conflicts with some of my program and with my OS which is Windows Media Center. I and someonelse believe that this OS has some problem with video-editing.
Moreover, I prefer to do like this. I don't want to use Prism but I juts change manually the .MOD file and rename it in .avi. Then I make DVD video by Nero Vision 7. This works perfectly and quality of the video is the same as .MOD. I'll let you know for further development.
Thank you all. Regards, Antonio
