It's been awhile since I was last in here, but here is a bit of advice for those with the JVC's Everio GZ-MG330 and the MODs you get from them. I use Powerdirector to do all my video editing on my laptop. My laptop, of the several I combed through, happened to have the software already installed which was a fantastic surprise since the Windows MovieMaker didn't want to play nice with a MOD at all.

Powerdirector comes from http://www.cyberlink.com and is better than WMM in my opinion. I can instantly upload straight to YouTube, transfer the MOD to WMM-friendly MPG or AVI, and straight burn to DVD or go all out and make professional grade DVDs of events, etc. I am not a pimp for PD, it just happened to come with my laptop. Had it not, I'd be one of the people in here, early and often, growling about the MOD squeezed video conundrum.

My BIGGEST complaint, still, is the horrific numbering system. Pathetic. Someone told me to just go by the date/time stamp, but I shouldn't have to in the first place: GRRR!!!

OK, that is my 2 cents worth. Hope it helps!

I often read questions about 'no sound while burning *.mod files f.i. with Nero 6' or 'I can play *.mod files but I hear no sound' et cetera.

I own a simply videocam (JVC GZ-MS100) and I had the same problems.

Maybe this is the solution: I went to http://www.free-codes.com and I downloaded the AC3 codec (filter) named AC3 Filter 1.51a. Totally free. I installed this file on my PC and restarted my PC.

Conclusion: I had sound playing the *.mod files AND sound on my burned DVD's by means of Nero 6! By the way, Nero 6 reads the *.mod extension. Maybe this will be a little help for those who are scrolling the whole internet looking for solutions.

Furthermore, I think (my experience) that the solution of converting the *.mod files to f.i. AVI, MPG et cetera ALWAYS means a loss of quality. So I think that the AC3 filter (or codec) is a pleasant alternative. Please let me know if this will help you! Regards, Berend.

Carolyn you are wonderful. I tried all the instructions and they worked perfectly well. However, after converting my .MOD files to AVI and imported to Windows Movie Maker I had the message below:

C:Documents and SettingsKentDesktopVideo convertedMOV00A.avi could not be imported. The required codec was not downloaded automatically because the Download codecs automatically check box is not selected in the Options dialog box

I then went to Tools and checked the Download codes box but there was still an error. Please advice.

ATTENTION MAC USERS!!!! Hope this will clarify. It's quite long-winded...but it works...!!!

After reading many conflicting ideas put forward, here is a FOOLPROOF method I eventually found for converting .MOD files to either use as a simplified view on your Mac, or for converting these files for import into iMovie HD.

SIMPLE VIEW
1) Plug in your DVD camera to your Mac via USB (Panasonic SDR-S7 or other using .mod extension as standard files).
2) Copy/Drag the SD_VIDEO folder onto your desktop from the 'NO NAME' icon which are the contents of the camera's memory card.
3) Locate the .mod files in the program folders and extract these to another created folder on the desktop, say for example: "Newpics1". Ignore the .MOI files or any other file types.
4) In this new folder, convert/rename all these .mod extension files into .avi. Simply retype the replacement letters in the file name. You will be prompted for this each time you replace the .mod suffix, and simple confirm "use .avi"
5) Go to the following website and download and install this application (Binary Version of VLC Player release 0.9.8a):
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html
6) Once installed, locate and open up the .avi files from your folder. You should now have no problem viewing (and hearing) your video recordings.
HOWEVER, TO CONTINUE AND IMPORT THESE FILES INTO IMOVIES HD....
You will need to do the following as these converted .avi files are unable to be read by iMovies. You may receive a Quicktime parsing error if you attempt this. No matter - here is the solution after completing steps 1-6 above.
7) Go to this website and download and install the application ffmpegX:
http://homepage.mac.com/major4/
8) When the application is opened, follow the instructions for downloading the 3 binary files required. Simply copy and paste the web locations and download the 3 small files to your desktop (they are called mpeg2enc, mencoder & mplayer). Then target these three desktop files by pressing the 3 'locate' buttons in the pop-up window whihc appeared on launch of the application. Enter password and confirm.
9) The ffmpegX application should now open.
10) Drag your .avi files, one at a time, into the 'from' area of the source format window (ignore the window if it remains on caption 'mpeg' - it does not affect the process). The important reference is at the top where the 'Open' file should show the .avi suffix.
11) Go to the dropdown menu from the small arrow in the "To" area of the Target format window. Select the .MOV option from the dropdown.
12) Hit the 'encode button and your file should then be converted into a .avi.ff.mov file, and be stored in the same location as the imported .avi file, or you can store it under a different name using the 'save as' function in the main window of the application.
13) Open IMovie and drag and drop your new avi.ff.mov files into the various windows.
14) You should be all set

Hope this helps you Apple folks out there

Hi, I have been very happy with my JVC GZ-MG275AA until yesterday when my laptop no longer recognises the camera. I un-installed and reinstalled the software in the laptop, but to no avail. I am in an office environment, and I installed the software on another desktop computer and it worked fine. Does anybody have any suggestions ??? Thanks in advance.

Max,
Someone higher up ^ Jack, I think, mentioned Cyberlink Power Director. That software came with the camera. I have no connection with Cyberlink either, but I am very happy with the software, and I told my brother about it, so he downloaded the latest version. I have an earlier version, but the latest one is REALLY impressive.

My entry just above this one: I solved the problem. The answer is DO NOT use an SD card other than the ones specified by JVC. I tried, and it changed all my settings on the camera. I had to re-format the hard drive and re set all the settings. Also, before you use an SD card - make sure you format it!!

And the above.
I GOT THE ANSWER

I usually do not get on message boards, however I own a JVC Everio and had to give out some information.

I tried several of the above contributors tactics in converting MOD. files to play on Widows Media Player, Media Center and Photoshop Elemements 4.0. I Run Windows Vista Ultimate. I did have some success converting my video (MOD.) files to photoshop and was able to create a nice movie from my video clips - thumbnails and all.

I had a stripped down version of Roxio Creator that came with my software bundle.

HOPEFULLY HERE IS AN ANSWER FOR ALL OF YOU, THAT HAVE BEEN AS FRUSTRATED AS ME.

I researched and spoke to several technical support and sales consultants in the industry.

I purchased Roxio Creator 2009. I had to uninstall all of my stripped down Roxio 2006 that came with my system. I then loaded Roxio 2009. It was the answer to my prayers. I ordered it on Monday, January 26, 2009 and received it today. Between that time I spent several hours messing with these MOD. files.

Once I loaded the software (which took about 20 minutes) I was off and rollin. I was immediately able to transfer my files from MOD and Roxio creator turned them into AVI/MPEG 2 files; I was in heaven.

I spent $74 dollars with shipping to my door.

This program is my savior. This program will do it all from what I have seen in the last 2 hours, it has some similarities with Windows Media Player, DVD Maker and Media Center. However, from what I have seen so far it will capture all your photos, movies, MP3 and looks like anything other music or digital media; it even will let you convert VCR and cassette tapes if you choose from what I saw in the drop down menu.

Please, research this on your own, but this was the best fit for me and what I like about Roxio Creator 2009 in contains about 35 different types of media conversions for anything, even though I most likely will never use most of the program.

All I can say to all of you is what took me hours/days I mastered in a few hours and no more headaches.

I do not know how this posting site works or as a fact any other. But I hope this info helps some of you out and that to the above for your help, you reviews sent me in the rite direction.

Thanks

Hi, I have now converted my .MOD files to mpg, but when I playback on windows media player it only plays about 5 seconds of film, and when I attempt to add one of these clips to windows movie maker, it tries to import the file, but when it reaches 22% it freezes! I'm not sure if this happens to anyone else but I must say that I am a little more than just disappointed with my JVC, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou.

Ben M. The best format for Windows Media player is not surprisingly, .wmv It would be unusual if your movie software does not have .wmv as a choice of format. If it doesn't there are plenty of conversion programs. Prism is one that has been mentioned and is very good. AVS Video converter, Blaze Media Pro, and Media Convert are a couple of others that all work (I've tried them)

I had the same problem with the prism converter. It converted the .mod files to .avi, but there was no longer any sound.

I figured out why the sound was being converted when I used prism to convert .mod files to .avi files. At the bottom of the prism app, there is a button labelled "Encoding Options". Click it, and you'll get a dialogue box. One of the options is "Sound compressor", which is set to mp3 by default. Change this to "DV Audio", and then the sound will also be converted correctly.

Hello carolyn, I myself am having problems also. Basically the scenario is that I am making a highlight video for our wrestling team...We to used the JVC camcorder to record and then downloaded them onto a laptop...However because of the large amount of video we transferred them onto a hundred gigabite external hard drive...the video were then saved to a folder within the harddrive....
My problem is that when I go into Prism and try to import the files...I browse my way to the folder and when i get into the folder none of the files appear to be there....I am using a different computer with the hard drive now but nothing seems to allow the videos to show up...I even tried copying them to the desktop...but no cigar...could you please aid me it is very urgent....thank you so much

I just bought an HP windows vista 64 bit laptop. My JVC Everio mg-330 mod files are not recognized when I try to import them into CyberLink's PowerDirector 7.

The video doesn't even show up in the browsing window when I click on "import media file". Pleasse help. I am discouraged.

I took the plug and play route. Just plugged in my camcorder and copied the mod files to my desktop and then tried to import them into power director 7. I can see the mod videos in explorer and open them in windows media player

Noah,

What I would do is open up the video files. Have them open on your desktop. Then open Prism. Now, drag and drop the videos into the prism. Don't try and import them. Just drag and drop.

Tina, I have no clue sweetheart. I don't have a laptop unfortunately. There maybe a problem with the file size? Since I'm not sure, maybe someone with a laptop can clue you in on this.

Hi Carolyn,

I work for a charity and we just brought the canon fs100 to make some films of our work. Unfortunately we did not realize you could not edit the files in Premiere.

I have downloaded the Prism software and the files played fine in Premier but there was no audio so I downloaded www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Mega_Codec_Pack.htm as recommended by Prism in their technical support section.

I reconverted the files into Premier and now have audio HOWEVER the footage is now all jerky, frames freeze and the audio is out of sync! I feel like Canon are messing with my mind a bit with all of us this.

Have you any idea what this means and how I can fix it. All suggestions very gratefully received, am at my wits end!!!

Many thanks, Susanna

How to convert .MOD file to mpg, avi, wmv,mp4,flv,mov and other COMMON formats?

People who own JVC MOD camcorders, Panasonic MOD camcorders or Canon MOD camcorders encountered the issue with--- what to do with the MOD files? And they hold the same dream that the recorded .MOD file type can be converted to mpeg, avi, mkv, flv, mp4, wmv or whatever more common. However, most major video editing suites seem to unwillingly accept the MOD format.

Someone successfully made it simply by changing the extension from .mod to mpg, but for most people, they just failed only to find there is no audio after the extension is changed, or the changed one doesn't allow you to import these files into Windows movie maker, not to mention upload some video to Youtube.com or Facebook. People use different operation systems, windows xp, Vista or something else. No one wants to say they just want to enjoy the .mod files on camcorder

Stop wasting your time and getting p***ed off. There is a very simple program that convert .mod NOT ONLY to mpg but many others like avi, mkv, flv, mp4, wmv, rm, rmvd, mov, dv, mg2 and swf.

http://www.iorgsoft.com/Mod-Converter/]MOD converter is the one shoot all the trouble. This excellent mod conversion tool is not just a converter but also a video editing tool. From now on, with the MOD converter you can enjoy your mod video on many media player, even on portable devices like blackberry, Gphone, PSP, Creative Zen,etc.

Hi Tina, I use a laptop, but it is running XP not Vista. Could be some of the settings for Vista need to be looked at. The system requirements for Power Director 7 say that Vista is ok to use but the Everio models that are compatible don't include the MG-330. That could be the problem, however I'm sure there is an answer to all that with JVC.

JVC EVERIO MOD file share: referencing MG330 camcorder. The Cyberlink DVD Suite that comes with new HP laptops is the Deluxe version that is very limited in its features and types of files it will import. Power Director in this package is PowerDirector 7 Version DE, PowerDirector 7 Deluxe and Ultra should be able to import JVC MOD files. Check www.trustedreviews.com. the Power Director 7 DE version will not.

I have the JVC Everio camera which produces .MOD files. I use ProShow Producer for movie and slide shows but ProShow will not recognize .MOD files.

I downloaded the Prism Video Converter software. I then go to my documents, where my video files are located and move them to the prism converter. Prism converts the .MOD files to WMV or AVI or any of the others that I select ok and indicates that it saves the file to WMV or AVI or other but when I go back to my documents it still appears as a .MOD file.

How can I get the file in documents to change over to the newly converted format?

I have an Everio camcorder dealing with the mod files like everyone else. I know how to convert wich is not a problem for me. The one problem I do have is In the cyberlink power cinema program that came with the camera.

My movies are in the backup folder I try to burn the movies right from there using power cinema and I keep getting error codes and it wont burn to a dvd.

I was wondering if anyone else is having this problem or maybe my burner as just malfunctioned.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Susanna: Have you tried asking Prism about how the frames freezing and jerking? This never happened to me, but I use WMM (Windows Movie Maker) to make my movies. WMM is free (if you have Windows) and has worked fine for my movies. I upload them to youtube regularly. Have you tried it instead of Premier?

Lane: The files have to be saved separately from your .mod files folder. I simply create folders on my desktop, labeled a,b,c,d,e,f etc., and when I convert, I save them to the corresponding folder. From there, they are saved as an .avi, .mpg or whatever extension you saved them to. Then simply import the converted files into WMM.

Brian: Have you tried using a different DVD maker?

What Layman said about Google's "iOrgsoft Mod converter" sounds great! I thoroughly trust just about anything Google creates. Its worth a go! If I were having problems converting files, I would trust Google to make something that would get the job done!

Another system to rename JVC MOD Files to Mpeg
1. Create a text file in the directory where the mod files are
2. Type the following command in the text file

ren *.mod *.mpg
del *.moi
del *.pgi
pause

3. on your note pad click file> Save As >
as file name put convert.bat
under file name you will see "file type" click on it and scroll to all files
then save the text you typed in your notebat as" convert.bat"

when done you will have a new file under name convert
it will be an executed file .. you will be able to use the file any time you want to convert your movies

Enjoy

if having problem email us we will send the bat file to you

kind regards

I also had the no sound issue once the file was converted with prism...the fix was to go into the options menu and click on the conversions tab. Then under decoder options check the use ffmpeg first box. The problem was solved after trying to convert my file from .mod to mpg again.
