The .M2T format is a high-definition file, more commonly known as "HDV". These files are created by various high-definition video camcorders.

The format was originally developed by JVC and swiftly supported by Sony, Canon and Sharp camcorders, using MiniDV/DVC cassettes.

This file type uses MPEG-2 compression and allows for resolutions of 720p and 1080i.

HDV is backwards compatible with DV.

M2T file extensions are created my OnLocation when redording a camera live feed on disk in HVD mode of the video camera. The camera is connected to the computer by use of firewire cable.
My main concern is why does it record with this kind of extension rather than .MPEG2!

Lee. If you have Adobe media recorder CS4, you can use it to convert .m2t files to MPEG file. You can also import .m2t files directly into adobe premier pro CS4 or AfterEffects CS4 for editing with no problem. Well... it works for me.

It opens with media player but for mac, not even Quicktime pro opens it. How can I convert it in order to be edited? So inconvenient for such a common format
