The JNLP acronym stands for “Java Network Launching Protocol†which enables users to launch applications on their desktop computers by using resources that are stored on a remote server and accessed over the internet or over a network (i.e. applets that run in a browser).
JNLP files store information such as the location of the Java program file, security permissions, resources, class that should be ran first, etc.
How to open JNLP files
To run JNLP files, the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) needs to be installed first. Once the JRE is installed on the desktop computer, JNLP files can be run by simply double-clicking them.
The JNLP format is XML-based so viewing and editing the contents of a file can be easily done using any text editor such as WordPad for Windows, TextEdit for Mac or gEdit for Linux.
