The simplest and easiest method was mentioned by Jon. It works flawlessly. Install the simulator and transfer to the simulator, and the transfer to Outlook. Simply Brilliant.

>>>One could download Blackberry Simulator software from Research in Motion from na.blackberry.com/eng/developers/downloads/simulators.jsp, then using the standard Blackberry Deskop Software (also obtainable for free from RIM if needed) the .IPD can be restored to this simulated Blackberry. The simulated Blackberry can then be synchronized with a traditional PIM application, like MS Outlook. This solution is a bit cumbersome but it will work and uses software which is not trial-ware. Hope this helps. Your friendly neighbourhood Blackberry Technical Support Rep.<<<

Seems people are missing his message. The whole inability to transfer between devices is a stupid and overlooked issues by manufacturers. APPLE should get this and solve the problem to make it easier to migrate.

Suggestion to ALL - READ ALL MESSAGES - IT WILL LIKELY SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM - as you are probably not the first person having the same issues...

Why have Blackberry made it, as far as I'm concerned, impossible to open an IPD "Back-UP" file on an external PC - A good reason why not to buy a Blackberry.

Are Blackberry aware of all of these postings regarding their IPD file Back-Up? Have Blackberry issued a concise instruction on how to transfer the files from one Blackberry to another?
I currently use the Blackberry 8310 CURVE and have recently upgraded to the Blackberry 9000 BOLD.
I CANNOT TRANSFER THE DATA ACROSS!

How do I open .ipd files? Bought Blackberry and saved a backup of the hand-held on the laptop via the Blackberry's software. But how do I open the files now? What program do I need to download? Also, does the backup file include all information on the Blackberry or just the address book?

Thank you

If you're too cheap to shell out $20 for ABC amber (like me) you can get bbExtractor from www.textifire.com for ten. It's not as slick and only saves comma separated value files, but it's faster and has an automation feature.

Also it extracts my received SMS messages just fine.

PLEASE READ - THERE IS A MILLION POSTS HERE WITH THE SAME QUESTION, AND THE ANSWER HAS BEEN POSTED A NUMBER OF TIMES.

For those who downloaded ABC Amber BlackBerry Editor - you have to open this application, then use 'Open IPD file' option in that application to open your backed up file. You can then view your contact list.

In order to transfer your backed up contact list to a new BB, open your BB Desktop Manager, click on 'Backup and Restore', click on Restore, and find your IPD file.

Hope this helps.
