IMG files are files used exclusively by Garmin Global Positioning System (GPS) devices. IMG files contain map data, including such thing as street names, one or many navigation routes, and local points of interest. The IMG file is used to store and upload both user-customized as well as Garmin pre-installed map data onto Garmin devices. IMG files can also be used to transfer map files between Garmin Devices.
