Rich Text Format

Text File
The Rich Text Format was developed by Microsoft in 1987. Even though it's a proprietary document file format, it was created mainly as a cross-platform document interchange solution.

RTF files contain rich text formatting which includes numerous fonts, font sizes, font colors and underlined, bold and italic text. Various page formatting options are also available such as custom tab widths, bullets and numbering, page orientation, page margins and line spacing. Images can also be saved within RTF documents.
