DOCX file extension
Microsoft Office Word (2007+) Document
The .DOCX extension belongs to the Microsoft Office 2007 suite (and above) and is a new format based on XML. This new XML format currently applies to the Word, Excel and PowerPoint components of MS Office and is known as the Microsoft Office Open XML format.
I have a question, Why does Microsoft Office 2007 word documents have an extension of .DOCX, but in earlier versions it is .doc?

Don't forget the Office 2007 fonts for maximum compatibility:

MD IRFAN AHMAD:
The reason is the new .DOCX files use XML, so the X stands for XML.
