.DIRECTORY files are used by the application Dolphin, which a file manager for Linux KDE (K Desktop Environment). .DIRECTORY files contain viewing preferences including window settings, icon positioning and view mode, useful for overriding the default installation settings. .DIRECTORY view files are only used in the KDE4 version of Dolphin, the KDE3 version uses .DOLPHINVIEW files to store user viewing preferences. These are automatically generated when viewing preferences are changed from the default.
