I found music files with extension *.al and searched the web and found 2 programs that can open it but there are probably more. The 2 programs are audacity and awave studio. Quicktime and NCH software do not work.I needed to change their extensions from *.al to *.raw then open them with awave or audacity. Awave was easier but with audacity you need to go to project>import raw data then select the proper audio format.Choose the waveform/format as G.711 a-law 8-bit 11025hz stereo then the file will play and convert correctly.

correction:NCH software's Switch Sound File Converter is the one that works and easier, not Awave. Awave doesn't work and is rather intrusive.
